Mark accurate bust darts every time: how a stainless steel dart scale works, with a worked example for size 36.
A dart scale is a flat stainless steel tool with pre-measured holes and guides, so you mark each bust dart from a fixed reference instead of measuring it fresh. Used well, it makes every blouse the same, which is what customers notice when they come back. This guide shows how to use one, step by step.
What the dart scale is for
The Size Hub dart scale gives you ready reference points for bust shaping and dart lines on blouse and churidar patterns, for sizes 28 to 49. It takes the guesswork and the repeated measuring out of marking a dart.
Step by step
- Place the cut fabric piece on your table, flat and smooth, with the bust area facing you.
- Align the scale with the bust or waist point marked on the piece.
- Find your size on the scale and use the pre-marked guide holes for the dart height that goes with it.
- Trace through the holes with a pen or tailor's chalk, then remove the scale and join the marks to draw the dart lines.
A worked example
Say the chest measurement is between 33 and 38 inch and you are marking size 36 with a dart height of 3. Align the scale at the bust point, pick the guide holes for size 36 at height 3, and trace. Doing it the same way on every piece gives you matching darts on the left and right.
Tips for neater darts
- Mark both sides before you lift the scale from the first one, so they match.
- Use a sharp chalk or a fine pen. A thick mark can move the dart by a few millimetres.
- Keep the scale flat; a lifted edge shifts the holes.
- Check the dart point against the pattern's printed mark if you are cutting from a farma.
Dart scale and a ready-cut farma
A paper blouse cutting farma already has the darts marked on it. The scale is for tailors who draft or alter patterns, or who want a quick check. You can see the tool, with its details, on the stainless steel dart scale page, and read the original article, why every tailor needs a dart scale.
