How to choose a blouse neck design: what suits the saree, the occasion and the wearer, and how to order the neck you want as a farma.
The neckline is the first thing people see on a blouse, and the part of the pattern that has to be drafted most carefully. This guide helps you choose one, and shows how to order it.
Think about the saree first
A heavily worked saree border usually looks best with a plain neck, so that the blouse does not compete with it. A plain saree can carry a more detailed back neck.
Common neck styles
- Close neck - a high, modest line, easy to wear and to stitch.
- Boat neck - a wide, shallow neck that runs shoulder to shoulder.
- Deep neck - a lower neck, often paired with a different back design.
- Princess cut - seams that run from the shoulder or armhole over the bust, shaping the blouse without extra darts.
Many of our models are named for the front and back neck they combine, such as a boat neck at the back with a deep neck at the front.
The neck depends on the frame, not only the style
A neck that looks right in a photograph can gape on you if the pattern was cut for a wider upper chest. That is why our custom blouse farma is drafted from your own measurements, with the upper chest deciding the neck, shoulder and armhole. We explain it in standard farma vs custom-fit blouse patterns.
