The common mistakes made while taking blouse measurements, and how to avoid each one so the pattern fits the first time.
Most blouses that do not fit were measured wrongly, not drafted wrongly. These are the common mistakes, and how to avoid each one. For the full method, see how to measure for a blouse pattern.
1. Measuring over the wrong undergarment
Measure over the undergarment you will actually wear with the finished blouse. A different bra changes the bust and the position of the darts, and it is the most common reason a correctly drafted pattern still does not fit.
2. Pulling the tape too tight
Keep the tape snug, not tight. You should be able to slip one finger under it. A tight tape gives a smaller number, and a blouse you cannot breathe in.
3. Holding your breath or your stomach in
Stand relaxed and breathe normally. A measurement taken while braced gives a garment you cannot sit down in.
4. Measuring your own back
Reaching around yourself changes the position of the shoulder blades, and the back width comes out short. Ask someone else to take the back measurements.
5. Mixing up upper chest and bust
The upper chest is taken above the bust, across the top of the ribcage. The bust is the fullest part. They are different numbers, and the upper chest decides the neck, shoulder and armhole. Entering one in place of the other gives a pattern cut for the wrong frame.
6. Guessing a number you are unsure of
If you are not sure of a measurement, measure it again, or ask us. A guessed figure is worse than a blank one.
7. Mixing inches and centimetres
Our form is in inches. Check that your tape shows inches and that you have not entered centimetres.
A quick check before you send
- Is every figure in inches?
- Did you measure over the right undergarment?
- Did someone help with the back?
- Do the numbers look sensible next to each other?
If a combination falls outside our drafting chart, we call you rather than guess a size the workshop cannot cut. Ready to order? Start with the blouse cutting farma guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can I measure myself?
Yes, except for the back, which is far more accurate with some help.
